Mission of Hope

A Special Edition of Mountain Lake Journal
The North Country Mission of Hope is a regional humanitarian organization based out of Plattsburgh, NY and was originally formed as a one time emergency response caused by the damage of Hurricane Mitch. It was soon realized that a more long-term assistance strategy would be required.
Since 1998, The North Country Mission of Hope has expanded to involve over 900 volunteers from 20 high schools and 22 colleges from 12 states and 10 countries.
Photojournalist Jared Stanley traveled down with mission #29 in August 2008 to the town of Chiquilistagua, Nicaragua, a village southeast of the capital city Managua. For 7 days he followed the volunteers on their daily outreach, and to capture not only the transformation of the Nicaraguan people, but the Mission of Hope volunteers as well.
Production of Mission of Hope on Mountain Lake PBS is brought to you in part by a grant from Frontline/world Social Entrepreneurship Series.
